I'm always on the lookout for new vegan foods at my grocery store. I'm super picky honestly, but I'm trying to be more willing to try things. When I was food shopping a week ago or so ago, I came across these:
I'm a fan of Mexican food. I could eat beans, rice, salsa, and guac all day every day. So these looked pretty good!
The ingredients are so simple. Here they are, taken from the website:
Organic corn masa (organic corn masa, trace of lime), Water, Black Beans, Corn, Olive Oil, Salt.
No allergens. Manufactured in a facility that produces tree nuts."
You have the option to cook these in the oven or on the stove. I tried both ways, but I preferred the stove. When I cooked them in oil on the stove, I felt like they were a little too crisp. I don't like all that oil anyway. In the stove you just brush each side with a little oil and it gave them a slight crisp but without all the added oil. After I cooked them on the stove, I actually placed them on a paper towel to absorb some of the excess oil.
This was pan cooked on the stove:
What I really loved most about these is that they're a great start to a meal. I was boring and had mine with green beans. I would've loved to have tried them with salsa verde and some plantains, or even cut up and topped on a salad. Despite their tiny size they're surprisingly filling. One of the many wonderful things about beans; they fill you up with all that fiber!
My only real complaint is the value. I can't be sure, but I want to say I paid about $5 for 4 of these in a pack. I wish the price was a bit lower, or they included 2 more in the package. They offer another vegan option which is Kale and Pinto Bean which I would love to try if my store ever carries it. But the rest are vegetarian options. Hopefully they'll have more vegan options in the future if these ones sell good!
I recommend grabbing a box to try. They're a quick start to a nutritious meal, so they're good to have on hand. Take a look next time you're food shopping to see if they carry them!
